Overview

The Royal Commission into Victorian Mental Health Services stated that Victoria needs a new framework to understand how mental health services are impacting the mental health and wellbeing of Victorians. This framework will outline the intended impact of the mental health reform, the changes that need to occur, and how we’ll know if we’re moving in the right direction.

People with lived and living experience, of supporting people who go through mental health challenges, need to be in the centre of this redesign. This is to ensure that the Department of Health are measuring how mental health services are assisting carers, kin, family, and friends to progress towards the goals that matter the most to you.

The Outcomes and Evaluation team of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Division of the Department of Health want to hear the voices of people who have experience in supporting people who have interacted with the mental health system.

Insights gathered from the workshop will inform the Mental Health and Wellbeing Division, Outcomes and Evaluation Team’s development of the of the new Outcomes Framework. For more information, please see the attached factsheet.

Workshop description

We are hosting two workshops in the weeks after Easter for people with lived/living experience of caring for/supporting people with mental health challenges. There will be an online workshop and an in-person workshop, you can attend whichever workshop that suits you best. You only need to attend one workshop.

  • Workshop 1: Tue 26 April, 10am - 12pm (in person, Tandem Office, Abbotsford) OR

  • Workshop 2: Wed 27 April, 2pm - 4pm (virtual – online meeting)

As a carer, kin, family member, or supporter the workshops will explore:

    • What better mental health might look like for you and your family in five or ten years

    • How you would like to feel when interacting with a service

    • What you want services to accomplish and how, for yourself and the person you support

    • What an ideal mental health system might look like in Victoria in the future

What else you might like to know:

    • The workshops will be about building a vision of a better mental health system for the future. It is important you say what you would like services to look like. You will not be required or expected to share personal information, though your experiences will inform your answers to the questions.

    • We are hoping for wide representation from the community and a diversity of opinions and voices

    • We will discuss different types of healthcare settings (e.g. community services, GP’s, clinical mental health services) so experiences in any of these different settings will be helpful

    • All participants will be provided with appropriate support around the workshops as well as opportunity to provide insights anonymously after the workshop, if you do not feel comfortable sharing in the workshop setting.

    • All participants will be reimbursed for their time in line with the Pay Scale developed in agreement between the Department of Health, Tandem and VMIAC. Please contact Tandem for further details.

Future opportunities

After these initial workshops there will be a further workshop on Tue 3 May (time to be confirmed) where we will share the collective themes and goals discovered through the workshops for review, suggestions, and next steps.

This will lead into the next phase of targeted workshops with key groups, to ensure all voices are heard. There will be an opportunity to express interest in attending any workshops that you feel are relevant to you.
